Nickita Starck is the founder of When Push Comes To Shove, the fastest growing alternative maternity structure in the world. WPCTS is an EBA award nominated organisation dedicated to empowering women while working closely with the PHA. Nickita founded the organisation in 2021 when independent midwives in the UK lost their insurance to practice. This was the last hope for women to have autonomy over their birth. Three or four years ago, The Daz Band was booked to play at a freedom event in Milton Keynes, and the memory is tainted by being without a lead guitarist, so Daz, great songwriter that he is, ended up having a crack at the solos. It is a trauma I might never recover from… but I digress. Every cloud has a silver lining, and this cloud turned out to have a gold lining because it’s where I met Nickita Starck. She gave a talk on natural childbirth, which was as hilarious as it was shocking as she went into the downright crimes that are committed against expectant and birthing mothers when they get caught in the standard sickness system. Not only that, but Nickita has an amazing voice, as we found out when she performed a set of songs just before our band went on. After her talk, I just had to go and chat to her and invite her on for an interview with our project at the time, the Human Unleashed, and she has been a great friend ever since. She has been very supportive of our work too, and I’m honoured to be included in the nutrition section of her training course and to have spoken online to her doula group. In recent years, Nickita has gone on to feature on many live interviews and podcasts, and she never fails to inform, entertain and shock.
Her work campaigning for informed consent in childbirth has saved countless mothers and babies from going through the many traumas that can happen when sucked into the system by the usual fearmongering. Her knowledge of natural childbirth is second to none, and her online training courses are a must for anyone wanting a deep knowledge of natural childbirth or to actually become a doula.
