I think it’s ancient fear (nay, terror!) of natural environmental occurrences that inspired “civilized” man’s domination, of other men, all women and children, and Nature. What I know to be generally true of males here in the U$A is that when they’re scared and/or insecure about something, they tend towards overpowering it somehow. I would tend to think that this is biologically based (as in physiology), plus a culture (which is an extension of biology) of dominance that results in this pattern of behavior. The “civilization” that re-started after the Late Bronze Age Collapse was decidedly more sadistic than previous iterations, and the Greco-Roman (Indo-European) variety in particular refused the cyclical cancellation of debt and redistribution of land that characterized early Mesopotamian civilizations, which had manifested social stability over long periods of time. The antisemitism of Ancient Rome is simply cultural narcissism, as they were diaper-clad in comparison to Ancient Mesopotamia. They were obsessed with proving that they were greater than those Semitic groups to the East. (Still are, IMHO. 😳) Now mainstream archaeology is indicating that there was an unexplained three hundred year drought preceding the LBA Collapse, and my understanding is that sadistic practices were developed during that time for survival purposes, but for us to continue them is insanity. I think only something existentially terrifying could’ve produced them in the first place. A deep dive into ancient world mythology can reveal what happened to our ancient ancestors. I sent some textual materials to Phil last Christmas, and if he hasn’t yet chucked them into the rubbish bin, your perusal of them and feedback would be greatly appreciated! (Are you guys even in the same town or region?! I don’t know.)
